How to make Chocolate Hedgehog Birthday Cake
Preheat the oven to 190°C/375°F, Gas Mark 5.
Grease and line an 18 cm (7 inch) sandwich tin.
Place the butter or soft margarine, sugar, eggs, flour and the cocoa powder in a bowl.
Beat well until the mixture is well combined.
Place mixture in prepared tin and bake for about 25 minutes until firm.
Turn out onto a wire rack to cool.
Prepare the buttercream.
Cut the cake in half to make two semi circles and sandwich together with a little of the butter cream.
Stand upright on a plate with the cut slices on the bottom so you have the basic shape of the hedgehog.
Trim a piece of the cake from each side of one end of the cake, to form a nose.
Cover the cake with the remaining buttercream.
Smooth the front bit of the cake to form the face and using a fork lift the buttercream over the back to form the prickly body.
Stick the chocolate buttons over the back to form the hedgehogs’ spikes and use the jelly sweets or Smarties for the eyes and nose.
