Halloween Chocolate Recipes
Halloween, 31st October, is one of my favourite holidays. To me it symbolises the start of the winding up of the year, images of red and orange leaves falling to the ground and clear star studded skies come to mind.
I decorate the house with spooky decorations and love to see the children dressing up in their costumes and I’m not adverse to dressing up myself and joining in the fun.
Every year I create a table laden with ‘scary’ food and have a few friends round, costumes are a must!
Whenever the door knocks it is a race to answer it to see the collection of witches and hob goblins we have that have arrived to ‘trick or treat’ us.
Trick or treating originated in Britain and Ireland during the Middle Ages when people, often children and the poor, went from door to door on Halloween, which is the night before All Souls Day, singing songs and saying prayers for the dead. In return they were given a Soul Cake, which was a cake filled with sweet spices such as Nutmeg, Cinnamon and All Spice and raisins and currants. It is said that for every cake that was eaten a soul was released from Purgatory.
Nowadays, the custom of giving Soul Cakes has been replaced with giving sweets and chocolate goodies and I always make sure I have plenty of treats in the house.
